Lyle O. Reitzel Gallery and Casa de Teatro present the well-known Dominican master living in Paris, José García Cordero, with his exhibit “Concierto Único” curated by LOR and GC, during the avowed institution’s 40th anniversary, which is led by Freddy Ginebra. The event will take place July 23rd 2014 at 7:30 p.m. in Casa de Teatro, Arzobispo Meriño 110, Ciudad Colonial, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The artist, who was awarded with the French Senate’s Merit Medal for his contributions to Latin-American culture, returns to where his first solo show, before his voluntary exile in France, happened. Additionally, García Cordero releases a special limited edition line of digigraphies, featuring emblematic works that show his wide visual spectrum. The earnings of these prints will be donated to Casa de Teatro as a retribution for the support received from Freddy decades ago. The occasion will feature talented musician Tadeo de Marcos’ live performance at 10:00pm.

Lyle O. Reitzel Interviews García Cordero

40 years after returning to Casa de Teatro…?

It is wonderful to know oneself to be alive and strong… 40 years sharing dreams, cheers, emotions, tragedies and loss. 40 years facing each other, proud, fit for the greatest possible number of movements.

Is it a return to the nest?

Of course, but one only returns to the nest if one learns to fly; if the reasons which function as pleasant ties are kept, and if something is brought back.

Among the pieces we have curated for the show, we selected some recently exhibited in London; some others are brand new surprises. How would you define these pieces?

It’s a new body of works, some of them have been seen before, but all of them have personal themes, linked to my politic, poetic and animistic works, and close to new trends. There are allegories to theater, tragic comedy, histrionics, and of course, the founding irony, for we have to keep humor alive, dark and criticizing as it may be.

Freddy Ginebra welcomes you…?

Freddy is much like Giles, Watteau’s clown; we all know him very well without really knowing who he is. Multifaceted, loving, content… He is what got me started.

García Cordero’s exhibit “Concierto Único”, will be open until August 30th, 2014.
