This new collection of paintings by James Lynch is inspired by the landscape of Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire and the haunting pastoral poems of Edward Thomas.

“I’m inspired by the weather and light, but also the sense of belonging and being part of the ongoing history in these landscapes”. - James Lynch

These new paintings celebrate the English landscape of Wessex, domestic in scale but vast in scope. There are panoramic views and epic skies, but in the large picture there are small indicators of human life - vapour trails, a small tractor, tyre marks, chalk white horses, a scarecrow, telegraph poles, farm, greenhouse...

James Lynch’s paintings of rural England, and his depiction of dramatic weather and seasonal light, place him with the English romantic painters - Samuel Palmer, Eric Ravilious and John Minton. Like them, James brings to his landscapes a contemporary personal vision.

James is one of a small number of artists who work in traditional egg tempera, making his own paint from raw ground pigment, water and egg yolks - the eggs are from his own hens which live next to his hilltop studio. Egg tempera was widely used by medieval and Renaissance painters and James originally took his instructions from the Quattrocento manual written by Cennino Cennini. He has been using the medium for over 20 years and each painting is the result of scores of glazes which create the brilliant translucent glow which characterises egg tempera.
