Commemorating the outbreak of the First World War with works by Walter Bayes and Muirhead Bone, RAMM’s portrait collection will also be represented by two naval heroes of the Napoleonic era with Devon connections - Admiral Edward Pellew and Captain Charles Proby. Pellew rose to become commander of the Mediterranean fleet and a national celebrity after the Bombardment of Algiers whilst Proby also gave outstanding service in the seven years war and the American war of independence.

Muirhead Bone was born in Glasgow and trained as an architect but later studied at Glasgow School of Art. An accomplished printmaker, he was best known for his etchings and drypoints. In 1901 he moved to London. After the outbreak of the First World War, the British War Propaganda Bureau appointed Bone as Britain's first official war artist in May 1916. Bone’s preferred subject matter - landscapes, architecture, urban and industrial scenes - made him an obvious choice. He arrived at the front in August 1916 at the height of the Battle of the Somme and by the following October had produced more than 150 drawings. Though his compositions lack horrific detail, they are nevertheless an authentic record of the logistics of war. Of great variety, they include battlefields, soldiers off duty, ruined towns, hospitals, ships and munitions factories.

From time to time the galleries will be closed for special events; please check before travelling.
