The Everson Museum of Art is pleased to announce it will present a new exhibition of contemporary experimental media, Performing Media: Works by Signal Culture Artists in Residence, from September 20, 2014 – January 11, 2015. The exhibition includes work by seven of the first artists in residence at Signal Culture, in Owego, NY.

“The Everson Museum was an early champion of video as an art form, and the first museum to collect it,” said Sarah Massett, Everson Interim Director. “We are very proud of that pioneering decision made in the 1970s, and are excited to present an exhibition that offers such a fantastic look at the different ways video is being used to create art today.”

Signal Culture was founded in 2012 by Jason Bernagozzi, Debora Bernagozzi and Hank Rudolph, with the idea to create an environment where those contributing to the field of experimental media art would have time and space to make new work and to interact with one another. The Signal Culture studio has both real time analog and digital image and sound processing equipment, custom made hardware and software, a variety of interactive interfaces and alternative imaging devices in a modular format – encouraging artists to play and engage with tools and with making in a real time, performative manner. The real time nature of the system means that the creation process is more physical and interactive, a performance with the tools, leading to the emergence of work and techniques which would not have been possible in a more traditional capture and edit setup.

All of the works in the exhibition were created through performative processes, whether those resulted in single channel videos, video or sound installation, or prints created from taking still images from videos. Artists include Andrew Deutsch, Benton C Bainbridge, Colleen Keough, Eric Souther, Jax Deluca & Kyle Marler, Pat Cain, and LoVid.

A free gallery walk is planned for September 20, beginning at 1 p.m. Artists from the Performing Media exhibit will join participants in the gallery to discuss their work and provide insight into their processes. Participating artists include Benton C Bainbridge, Patrick Cain, Jax Deluca & Kyle Marler, Andrew Deutsch, Colleen Keough and Eric Souther. At 3 p.m., artists LoVid will offer an audience participatory performance followed by a gallery talk to discuss their work.

An opening night reception is planned for September 19, from 5:30 – 8 p.m. at the Everson Museum. Artists from the Performing Media exhibit will offer live performances during opening night. Performances include a range of electronic media instruments, some handmade and rare, and will combine experimental sound, film, video and real time image and sound processing. Artists include Benton C Bainbridge, Patrick Cain, Jax Deluca and Kyle Marler, Colleen Keough, Eric Souther, and Andrew Deutsch , joined by Emil Schult , one of the founders of Kraftwerk.
