This November, eleven British artists will gather together to share their artistic visual expression of sleep at a special exhibition at Gallery Different in London hosted by ibis hotels. Ibis has asked each artist to create a piece of work inspired by sleep. The results are stunning and reflect the dreams and creativity inspired by a good night’s sleep.

The ibis Sleep Art exhibition, which takes place w/c 24 November, will be headlined by Carne Griffiths and 10 other artists: Saroj Patel, The Krah, Alexis Marie Sera, Sequin Kay, Sian Storey, Rutie Borthwick, David Bray, Bettina Stuurman, Alicia Gradon, Jonathan Armour.

The exhibition opens on 24th November – however, the exhibition will be incomplete when it launches. The exhibition will feature the Sweet Bed by ibisTM, a bed designed and built by ibis engineers. Every night during the exhibition, artists will sleep in the bed in the gallery and create a new work of art inspired by that night’s sleep. The exhibition will grow daily, the exhibition itself therefore becoming an installation space for the exploration of sleep and creativity.

The Sleep Art exhibition will be headlined by London-based artist, Carne Griffiths. Griffiths has exhibited throughout the UK with work displayed in the Royal Academy, London Original, Print Fair, London Art Fair, Affordable Art Fair and Moniker, as well as holding solo exhibitions in Milan, Hong Kong, London and Brighton, with additional work shown internationally in New York, New Orleans, Germany and Singapore.

Commenting on the exhibition, Carne Griffiths said: “It’s inspiring to have been invited to participate in this exhibition and creative investigation into the effect that sleep plays in the artistic process. My own work looks to many of the early surrealist practices - the unconscious, the automatic method and of course the influence of dreams and dreaming on the creative process. I'm looking forward to seeing what the artists produce under these conditions and to making my own contribution to what I’m sure will be a truly innovative and exciting exhibition.”

"Each artist is celebrated in their field, many with international acclaim,” said Inge Van Ooteghem, SVP Operations Economy and Budget Hotels. “The styles, background and influences of each artist are very different. It will be very interesting to see how their individual experiences during their ibis residence are translated into their work. For years we have seen the relationship between art, creativity and sleep and we are fascinated to see how this will be communicated visually by the artists. Ibis is a creative brand - our hotels are design led and our creativity even went so far as to design and build our own beds - Sweet Bed™ by ibis - so this is a great opportunity to demonstrate that a creative, comfortable environment and a good night’s sleep fuel creativity.”

ibis hotels is the hotel company which brought you the Sleep Art App, an iphone app which turns the movements of your sleep into digital brush strokes. This exhibition marks ibis taking sleep creativity one-step further, demonstrating how sleep and creativity are connected.
