Louis K. Meisel Gallery, in conjunction with Bernarducci.Meisel.Gallery, is pleased to announce Illuminations, the inaugural New York City solo exhibition of artist Stephen Knapp. From November 13, 2014 to January 31, 2015 Knapp will exhibit his unique light-based installations referred to as “lightpaintings.” The show will include five site-specific pieces as well as smaller-scale works.

Knapp harnesses light, directing it through an intricate network of shaped and polished glass to create complex abstractions. Existing somewhere between sculpture and painting, his work’s inability to be categorized is part of what makes these pieces so fascinating. Knapp has been experimenting with light throughout his career. Beginning as a photographer, he recorded and transformed light through his camera lens. Over time, his work has manifested itself in a variety of mediums and focused more exclusively on the unique properties of light. Knapp infuses his pieces with vibrant colors, transforming white light into pure color through a series of coated safety glass pieces. Each installation takes on a new life depending on where it is displayed, exceeding its physical dimensions to create depth.

Knapp has gained an international reputation for his large-scale, site-specific installations and has had solo museum exhibitions throughout the United States. He lives and works in Central Massachusetts.
