Following a major storm in Winter 2014, which caused serious damage to its main architectural structure and saw it close for extensive rebuilding, SALT, a unique cultural project located in the Norwegian Arctic Circle, has re-opened to the public this June.

Attracting global media attention when it first launched in Summer 2014, SALT’s incredible, 150m-long A-frame architectural structure, has now been fully repaired. The site has re-opened to the public with a brand new restaurant/bar space called Naustet & Lanternen, alongside the existing structures, which include a performance auditorium, a sauna and group of small, mobile lodges with glass celings and wood-burning stoves, in which guests can stay in on the beach.

After major damage to the original site-specific installation, acclaimed Chinese artist Yang Fudong’s beautiful black and white film commission for SALT, The Light That I Feel, which was shot on location in and around Sandhornoya, is now presented as a new single-channel film installation. Housed in a raised viewing structure on stilts in an isolated location on the beach, the film’s grand, slow and poetic cinematic language counters the natural scenery on the Arctic island in an extraordinary way.

A new series of music and art commissions will also launch over the summer. For the re-opening weekend, Norwegian musician / recording artist Biosphere premiered a newly commissioned ambient soundtrack called Polar Low, which is now installed in the incredible ’Agora’ Sauna which features as part of SALT. Biosphere is well known for his ambient techno and arctic ambient styles, use of music loops and striking sound-sampling from sci-fi sources. Housing 100 people, Agora is the world’s largest sauna, featuring a glass-front which looks out at the Arctic Sea.

Visual artists Edvine Larssen and HC Gilje have been commissioned to create two further new site-specific art installations for SALT, which will open at SALT in August 2015.

A new portable structure, Naustet & Lanternen, has also opened at SALT, housing a restaurant and bar. The restaurant offers a delicious menu based on locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.

A further programme of concerts and performances will take place at SALT across the summer, to be announced.
