Cyclo-cross is a form of bicycle racing; the races usually take place during the autumn and in the winter time. It consists of a number of laps of a short course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills, and obstacles. As the path is challenging and constantly changes, it requires the rider to quickly dismount, carry the bike while navigating the obstruction and remount. The sport is extremely popular in the traditional road cycling countries such as Belgium, France, and the Netherlands.

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) World Championship Cyclo-cross 2012 will be held in Koksijide, Belgium, on the 28th and 29th of January, 2012. This amazing coastal village is now getting ready for the event, and it is full steam ahead for the organizers of this top sports event. The lovely town of Koksijde is located in the north-western part of Belgium, on the North Sea coast, a few kilometers from the border of France. Close to Koksijide are the cities of Ostend, Bruges, Kortrijk, and Ghent.

The Koksijde Dunes Cross offers unique paths and layouts. The hills of the dunes offer natural stands, and boost the public’s involvement in the event. Next year there will be a new challenge for the racers; it is called the X Dune and it is an additional test to pass for the racers. After World Championship 2012, X Dune will be named for the future World Champion.

With UCI, Koksijde Council intends to deliver a perfect speed cycling celebration both for racers and public; people can feel and breath the anticipation in the air. The racers are practicing to be ready for the event, while the public is waiting with anticipation to see how the racers will handle the new dune.

One thing is sure, the race guarantees excitement, thrill, and surprises!
