“But in a still life, there is no end to our looking, which has become allied with the gaze of the painter; we look in and in, to the world of things, in their ambiance of cool or warm light” Mark Doty.

Thingamejigs and Thingimebobs, our brand new exhibition features an assorted collection of still life compositions.

Confined within the gallery walls are seven talented artists who all bring something different to the table. Barry Patterson has hints of cubism within a simple tableau of plates and bowls. Marie Robinson shows that life can always be a tea party. Her works challenge the original concepts of still life itself. Annie Rouse draws inspiration from old songs, stories and sketches to create abstract moments in time between place and memory. Jonathan Pocock‘s skilled hand uses pallet knife to manipulate oil, creating circular shapes on the canvas. With this, texture is created by the layers of paint giving a beautiful ascetic feel on the eyes. Este Macleod an acrylic painter, originally from South Africa, brings her childhood home into her pieces; colourful and vibrant, you are taken right to the root of the story. Our last oil painter in the show is Teresa Pemberton a master at blurring colours together to create warm compositions of all that is still.

Last but not least is Vicky Oldfield. Her works are produced by a variety of materials: wire, etching, oil sticks, tissue paper and coloured card. A collage is made up with these materials and then placed in a metal press. A print is taken of the design and then reworked with oil sticks on top. Her flower designs are bold and striking there is nothing wilting about these compositions what so ever as with the rest of our fabulous show.
