Following the huge success of the first Duesseldorf Photo Weekend in February 2012, the event will take place for a second time on the weekend of 2 and 3 February 2013. This time, an even greater number of galleries, museums, and institutions from the world of art and photography in Duesseldorf will throw open their doors for an entire weekend and host photography-related exhibitions and events.

The Duesseldorf Photo Weekend 2013 will kick off on the evening of Friday, 1 February with the opening of the 'Bryan Adams - Exposed' exhibition at the NRW-Forum. So far, over 15 gallerists have contacted the organisers, Werner Lippert of the NRW-Forum and gallerist Clara Maria Sels, who is responsible for the organisation of the Düsseldorf galleries, to say that they would like to host photography exhibitions. Other institutions such as the Künstlerverein Malkasten and the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf are also on board. The Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf, the municipal theatre in the city, is planning to include the theme of photography in its 'Enthusiasm' series. In the Jacobihaus, which belongs to the Künstlerverein Malkasten, part of the Wilhelm Schürmann collection will be on display. Moreover, Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber will be hosting a book performance and release party for the Antiphoto manifesto during the weekend.

The exhibitions all show that Düsseldorf is the capital not only of artistic photography but also of the entire spectrum of applied photography (such as fashion or celebrity photography).

Photo Review
As part of the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend 2013, the magazine KRAUT will be holding a portfolio review for young photographers from around the world on 2 February. Participants will have the opportunity to show their work to a top-class, professional jury from all fields of photography (from fashion to fine arts). The objective here is to give young, talented photographers a forum so that their photographs can be discussed, thereby fostering interactive exchange between the established, institutional photography sector and up-and-coming photographers to the benefit of all involved. The event will be held in the Salon des Amateurs in Düsseldorf.

Photo Book Salon and Stephen Shore exhibition
The second Duesseldorf Photo Weekend will also be accompanied by a Photo Book Salon at the NRW-Forum. Over 30 publishers, booksellers, second-hand and antiquarian book sellers, and young publishers of photo books and photo magazines will present their books and magazines on photography. For several years now, it has been clear that in addition to the market for original prints, the photo book is increasingly becoming an independent form of photographic expression in its own right. Books and exhibitions have made the photo book popular, and rarities are in great demand. For young photographers, the photo book is a relatively inexpensive way of dealing with artistic photography and reaching an audience. In addition to the Photo Book Salon, the Arts Foundation of North Rhine-Westphalia (Kunststiftung NRW) will be hosting a series of lectures on this subject, thereby underlining the significance of the photo book for artistic photography. The Photo Book Salon will be held at the NRW-Forum from 1 to 3 February 2013. It will be open from midday to 5.00 p.m. on Friday, 1 February, and from midday to 8.00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, 2 and 3 February. It is being organised by the photo book expert Stefanie Armbruster and the photographer, publisher, and blogger Jeffrey Ladd.

Fascinated by the opportunities of print-on-demand technology, the American photographer Stephen Shore began to create photo books with Apple's iPhoto service in 2003. Each of these books was a photographic snapshot of what he was doing on a given day. The books are limited to 20 copies per book and are sold by his galleries. The New York Metropolitan Museum has included these works in its collection. As part of the Photo Book Salon, we will be showing 20 of these books (to look at and leaf through) in the upstairs gallery of the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf.
