Would a museum deliberately put a fake Monet on show? The answer at the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum is yes, because Bank of the Seine at Port-Villez, which the Museum’s scientific experts have proved to be a fake, is to be included in a new collection display titled From the Museum’s Laboratory.

This will give visitors a vivid insight into the fascinating work undertaken in the Technical and Restoration Department. Along with the fake Monet, the presentation will contain an interactive screen display offering a wealth of interesting information and video material on painting in the Middle Ages, on technical tricks used by Van Gogh and on the methods employed by restorers. Also featured is an engrossing series of X-ray images and infrared photographs of a medieval altarpiece.

Visitors can acquire this unique glimpse behind the scenes in the daily life of the Museum on the second upper level of the building.
