The Liebieghaus antiquities department showcases the cultures of the Mediterranean spanning more than three and a half millennia, from ancient Egypt to classical Greece and Rome.

The objects they produced recount the numerous adventures of mythical heroes and mirror the belief in a world of gods as well as the achievements of philosophy and science. In addition to the sacrificial scene from the famous pyramid of Pharaoh Sahure, the Liebieghaus also has in its holdings the lifelike rose granite portrait of Alexander the Great ‒ a symbol of the power and presence of the pharaohs and kings.

A special testimony to Greek Classicism is the unparalleled marble statue of Athena by the sculptor Myron. Among the gems of Roman sculpture are the striking marble busts of Augustus and Marcus Aurelius.
