Saffron Gallery in East Grinstead is currently hosting 'Transition', a solo exhibition by Hampshire Life Magazine's 'Artist of the Year', Claire Wiltsher. Transition will subsequently move to the Annexe in Battle from 25 November.

Transition brings together a body of paintings that reflects the many journeys Claire, a keen walker, has been on within a year. Locations include the Isle of Skye, Sark, the New Forest and Shatterford, close to her home. Claire absorbs the light and atmosphere on location, then takes her drawings, photos and collected objects back to the studio for painting. Her work portrays a sound understanding of colour and structure within painting, but with spontaneous free mark making. A flash of light or surface movement is portrayed by dragging paint across the canvas with a palette knife or piece of card! Claire says "too much reality hinders imagination".

Texture, light, depth and that feeling of being an observer of the scene are all present in the way Claire has perfected.
