Open Mind Art Space is pleased to present "INK", a group exhibition featuring works by returning artist Vanesa Gingold, and Los Angeles-based artists Trina Turturici and Jody Zellen.

"INK" is a collection of semi-abstract pen and ink drawings on paper. The exhibition brings together the work of three artists, each working in different styles and subject matters. Vanesa Gingold’s intricate illustrations include fragments of portraits and remnants from nature colliding together on the paper. Her larger “daisy chain” drawing is a delicately abstracted rendering of daisy flowers strung together by their stems.

"INK" also features drawings by Trina Turturici and Jody Zellen, which are spontaneous sketches guided by each artist’s intuition and unique imagination. Trina Turturici’s series of ink drawings began as a warm-up sketching exercise before starting on larger painting projects, and have become an integral part of her studio practice. She begins by laying out several sheets of paper and without any planning draws a shape onto each paper with a sumi brush and ink. She then continues to add to the drawings, letting each dry as she rotates through each one. Female figures, lively faces, and organic shapes resembling leafy plants and cacti make their way from Turturici’s wandering mind into her drawings.

Jody Zellen’s drawings are stream-of-conscious doodles that fill the page from edge to edge. Over time these drawings have grown from small drawings on A4 paper made with a uni-ball roller pen to archival markers on larger sheets of paper measuring 22x30 inches. Zellen's dense works are filled with overlapping figures, fragments of buildings and abstract geometric shapes that together create their own universe.

Vanesa Gingold’s works create dynamic interiors and exteriors, an interplay of concealing and revealing, of surface and structure. Works by Gingold that were previously exhibited at Open Mind Art Space consisted of delicate sculptures made with handmade paper stretched over intricately constructed armatures. In her intricate drawings, fragments of plant, animal, and human life combine through a process akin to a one-player surrealist game of exquisite corpse. Vanesa received her MFA from University of California, Santa Barbara in 2016. She currently resides in Oakland, California and teaches printmaking at University of California, Davis.

Trina Turturici is a Los Angeles based artist working in drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture. Her process involves alternating between working spontaneously and from direct observation. She aims to channel both the conscious and subconscious mind which results in an uncanny and surreal portrayal of everyday life. Turturici was born in 1986 in San Jose, California. She received her BFA in Drawing and Painting from California State University, Long Beach and her MFA in Painting from Boston University. Her work has been exhibited at New Image Art Gallery, Cordesa Fine Arts, and Vacancy in Los Angeles, as well as various galleries in Boston, Oakland, and Philadelphia.

Jody Zellen is a Los Angeles based artist who works in many media simultaneously. She creates interactive installations, mobile apps, net art, animations, drawings, paintings, photographs, public art, and artists’ books. Zellen moves easily between the analogue and digital realms and in all her works she wants viewers to be inspired to think about the relationship between what is seen and what is imagined. Jody received a BA from Wesleyan University in 1983, a MFA from CalArts in 1989 and a MPS from NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program in 2009.
