The artist Elena Monzo (Brescia, 1981) is pleased to announce the art residency project in Lebanon from 1st to 22nd July. The comparison with new cultures and images drives the Italian artist to meet a new and ancient culture, the Middle East, which will take the female image research into new opportunities for discussion.

The residence, in collaboration with Fadi Mogabgab Gallery in Beirut, represents a further step of the project Apotropaika started in 2012. With the aim to find points of convergence/divergence between different cultural and artistic features of the female body in contemporary society, Monzo’s women will be transposed into Lebanese cultural context, where East and West come to new cultural clusters, unique dichotomies and melting-pots. Elena Monzo was born in Orzinuovi (Brescia) in 1981. She got the degree in Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brera and she focused entirely on the artistic creation and research about the feminine figure. The ephemeral society and the feminine figures are the most recurrent topics in the research work of Elena Monzo. They are described in each side of their obsession: the out-fit to comply with the mass culture standards and the maniacal attention to details, together with the need of reflecting a precise flawless image. The aim of the artist is to underline the decay of society totally fixed upon aesthetic rules. The tools used by the artists are acrylic colours, graphite, make-up, textures strips and glitters, which unite the different parts of the bodies creating a chaotic and visionary whole. In 2013 the artist was exhibited during the Bologna Art Fair and was awarded with the Camera di Commercio prize in the city of Mantova and she has won the first edition of the international contest Call For Bushwick (New York).

In 2012 the artist has took part to the project Twin Room in Havana (Cuba), part of the Festival de Arte Jovem, and has shown her works in solo shows at Galleria Traghetto in Venice and in Brescia at the Galleria Colossi. She was also invited in 2012 to the exhibition Homo Faber by curator Mimmo Di Marzio in Milan and to the show dedicated to the international movement of the pop-surralism Go with the Flow curated by curator Alberto Mattia Martini in Lucca. In 2011 she participated to the 54. International Art Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia, Italian Pavilion - Lombardia, Regional Palace, Milan, Faulty fables, curated by curator Carolina Lio, 00130 Gallery, Helsinki (Sweden), Elective Affinities, curated by Luigi Meneghelli, ABC Arte Boccanera, Trento. In 2010, the artist was invited to the VII Biennale d’Arte della Postumia - Giovani 2010, curated by Beatrice Buscaroli, Gazoldo degli Ippoliti (MN), the group exhibition curated by Chiara Canali The White Cellar in the former Fiat Palace in Turin and in the exhibition Giorni Felici a Casa Testori, at Casa Testori (Milan). The artist lives between Milan and Brescia.
