Klaus Hähner-Springmühl (1951 – 2006) was one of the most influential artists of the oppositional art scene in East Germany.

The MdbK has gone through his artistic legacy and compiled this retrospective, in conjunction with previously unshown works lent by private collections. The assembly of paintings, drawings, photographs, installations and music not only illustrates the breadth of his artistic output.

The fragmented impression of the individual pieces also emphasises the performative character of his overall artistic approach, which accompanied Klaus Hähner-Springmühl through all aspects of his life: for Hähner-Springmühl, art was existential in the true meaning of the word.
