Benrimon Contemporary is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by British artist Alastair Levy. The Following Guidelines Should Assist You will be Levy’s first solo show with the gallery and his first in the United States.

Levy’s practice is multi-disciplinary and incorporates a breadth of forms including drawing, photography, painting, performance and video. Holding these disparate elements together is an ongoing enquiry into the nature of everyday life and a desire to find ways of translating the immediacy of lived experience into something tangible and thought-provoking.

This exhibition presents a diverse body of work made over the past year which explores the relationship between accident and intention, the impulse to archive and the notion of what Levy terms ‘default aesthetics’. The pieces included here employ materials ranging from the domestic to the industrial. Correction #4 (2013), for example, documents the artist’s application of correction fluid directly on the gallery wall. What might initially be viewed as an exercise in asceticism is undoubtedly underpinned with humor. It is somewhere along this fault line between the serious and the playful that many of the artist’s works reside.

Alastair Levy (b. London, 1979) graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2008. Recent shows include Dienstag Abend, Gdanska Galeria Miejska, Gdansk (2013); Public Assembly – An Alternative Summer Show, The White Building, London (2013); Ephemeral Self – Finite Projections, Galerie NTK, Prague (2013); Love Me, Benrimon Contemporary, New York (2012) and Circa 1960, Guest Projects, London (2012). His work is held by the Zabludowicz Collection in London. Levy lives and works in London.
