Like the homonymous novel by the great Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier, my proposal is a work in progress. My purpose is to illustrate the wonderful reality of local characters who alter reality and take it to a higher level. Each person comes out every day to earn their livelihood in a special way. They become enlightened, and exalted.

Encouraged by the idea of having their portrait taken in a studio along with the products they sell, time stands still for them. All the images are of people who are over 70 years old.

I photograph relationships. These are studio portraits which I approach from different angles and look to the inner world of people who roam the streets of my city, Matanzas, Cuba, selling simple articles in order to live. I try to represent a very strong and historical generation that constitute the tangible reference closest to our ancestors, culture and identity.
