A major group exhibition by some of The Outsidersʼ and Lazaridesʼ galleries most admired artists, Pulp will display works on, or involving, paper rather than canvases. Pulp also sees some world-famous names making their debuts at The Outsiders Newcastle for the very first time.

Jonathan Yeo, the planetʼs most sought-after portrait painter, has contributed a large-format example of his sought-after Leaf Study body of work. This will be shown alongside three uniquely hand-finished pieces from Jonathanʼs forthcoming folio of celebrity portraits. The artist will be showing hot of the heels of his landmark solo exhibition at Londonʼs National Portrait Gallery.

Street art superstar Invader returns to the north-east of England for the first time since 2006. The mosaic murals installed by the artist back then still have pride of place on some of the cityʼs busiest streets, including The Outsidersʼ Quayside location. This time though, heʼs armed with graph paper rather than ceramic tiles.

Much-loved picture book author-cum-fine artist Oliver Jeffers, hot off a landmark solo exhibition at Lazarides Rathbone, will also showcase some of his subtle yet gravitas-laden works. And Shepard “Obey” Fairey will finally add his name to the elite squad of urban artists to have graced The Outsiders Newcastle over the years.

Contemporary representational painter Ian Francis will show a selection of his conceptual works. One of urban artʼs few sculptors, Mark Jenkins, will exhibit a somewhat misappropriated skate deck, applying his treasure-from-trash aesthetic to the “works on paper” brief with characteristic wit. Newcastleʼs very own homeboy HUSH, hot on heels of a US tour where he pained the interiors of some of the worldʼs most exclusive nightclubs, will add glamour to proceedings with his entrancing avatars of female sexuality.

Acclaimed painter Brett Amory, showing this spring at Lazaridesʼ flagship Rathbone gallery for the very first time, will take part in Pulp as will another master of introspection from California, Sage Vaughn.

The world-beating line-up also includes two pioneers from either side of the Atlantic: European graffiti legend turned master draughtsman Mode 2, plus the colourful, hilarious and thought-provoking New York pioneer Todd James.

Some of the gallery groupʼs youngest talent will be showcased at Pulp too. Multi-disciplinary artist Know Hope, whose installation A Forest of Missing captured hearts and minds at Lazaridesʼ BRUTAL exhibition, will exhibit his haunting drawings. Controversial, prodigal painter Charlie Isoe will contribute some of his simultaneously beautiful and challenging sketches of nudes. Both appear fresh from solo exhibitions at Lazarides Rathbone.

Pulp also welcomes four artists making their debuts for the Lazarides organisation. Representing Ukraine, AEC and Waone from Surrealist duo Interesni Kazki (translated as “interesting colours”) has independently contributed two immaculate hand-coloured etchings in their inimitable Dada-esque style. From Sweden, Billy Norrby – who only exhibited his stunning artwork for the first time in 2011 – presents a taste of whatʼs to come from his blockbuster canvases combining old master techniques with themes from the golden era of fantasy art: think Boris Vallejo meets Botticelli. And last but not least, from Southampton, England, Band of Skulls singer and bassist Emma Richardson steps away from the microphone and up to the easel for the first time with the gallery.

Situated directly opposite the Baltic, The Outsiders Newcastle is one of the premier galleries exhibiting the urban genre and new contemporary painting worldwide. With its stellar roll-call, Pulp solidifies the galleryʼs reputation as a major international force in established and emerging art.
