Born in 1952, Simpson studied at Glasgow School of Art. He then worked as a graphic designer in Edinburgh before giving up full time employment to paint. Exhibiting regularly in Edinburgh and London, he follows in the long tradition of Scottish landscape painting from Nasmyth through to the Glasgow Boys, the Scottish Colourists and James McIntosh Patrick.

This exhibition featuring his latest work is drawn from the extensive travels around the islands of the West coast of Scotland. The resulting exhibition offers a unique and honest perspective of this beautiful area, demonstrating Simpson’s intuitive relationship with the Scottish landscape. In his typically candid approach, he combines lively textures with sensitivity to subtleness of tone and colour. Rejecting all artifice, he is able to create atmospheric studies of the transitory nature of light and its effects on the landscape.
