Maria Stenfors is delighted to present Astrid Svangren’s second solo exhibition at the gallery. In the primary work encountered, the scratched Plexiglas surface with sections of the title scratched into it creates a coloured filter and a barrier for the following paintings. Disregarding the parameters and proportions of the gallery space, Svangren’s work creates its own stage setting that overrules the gallery space and denies an overriding vantage point. Instead, the transparency of the paintings reverberates across and through surfaces, distorting and adding to the original image, breaking down the separation between the works and creating their own dialogue that is dependent on the physical presence of the viewer.

Astrid Svangren was born in Sweden in 1972 and lives and works in Copenhagen. She graduated from Malmö Art Academy in 1998. A selection of recent exhibitions include: ‘What I remember…’, Moderna Museet, Malmö, 2009; Moderna Museet Stockholm, 2010; Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm, 2011; National Gallery of Denmark, 2012; Artipelag, Stockholm, 2012; The Wanas Foundation, Knislinge, 2012; National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen, 2012; ‘Pioneer Voices’, Festspillene, Harstad, 2013; Margulies Collection, Miami, 2013.
