Launching this May for the first time in London, Lazarides Rathbone is pleased to present a solo exhibition by the Miaz Brothers. Entitled Dematerialized, A New Contemporary Vision, the exhibition will feature a news series of large-scale canvases from the two Italian-born, Valencia-based siblings, Renato and Roberto, whose and distinctive use of air-brushed aerosol single them out as one of Contemporary Art’s most unique creative duos.

For their UK debut, the brothers will showcase a selection of new works from their Antimatter series. Each piece is produced through the meticulous layering of spray paint on canvas to achieve a blurred effect, the result of which is an image of a disguised yet an identifiable figure. The artists explain the reasoning behind their choice of medium is one of parallel with their outlook on human existence: "We use it to represent the fact that we are composed of infinite particles in continuous evolution, which change in tandem with the complex reality that surrounds us."

It is this subsequent indistinct approach to portraiture that defines the duo's ultimate objective with their process: "dematerialising the lines, we gain a substantial indetermination of the picture. This skips any immediate reaction and provokes the viewer to use mnemonic associations instead for their own personal visual information encoding.”

Alongside the ‘Masters’ and ‘Ghosts’ imagery, the Miaz Brothers will also display a ground-breaking set sculptures and research paintings substantiating their creative philosophy:

We look to provide a visual experience that activates our awareness that compels the viewer to recognise and re-establish the limits of his or her own perception, to regain control of the real. The paintings invite us to always be able to take a considerable distance, to see the whole picture.

Roberto and Renato Miaz were born in Milan in 1965 and 1968 respectively, where they attended the Art School and European Institute of Design. Since childhood, the two have shared their lives collaborating in work and play.

The Miaz Brothers have had solo exhibitions of their work in Milan, Venice, Barcelona and Valencia, and have shown in major group exhibitions at Hong Kong’s Cat Street Gallery, Art14 London and London Art Fair. Awards include the 2010 Amposta Museum of Contemporary Art International Biennial Prize, Barcelona, and 2011 International Arte Laguna Prize, Venice. Miaz Brothers live and work in Valencia, Spain.
