Villa del Arte Galleries proudly presents the works of French artist Jean-François Rauzier in his second solo show to be held in Barcelona. The exhibition Longue Histoire will be inaugurated on 17 April and will be open to visitors until 31 May 2014. The 11 pieces on display toy with the limits of the image, inviting viewers to lose themselves in each work, conceived by the artist to form a spectacular visual maze.

As the inventor of Hyperphotography, a technique involving the digital composition of an infinite number of photographs of a single image, Jean-François Rauzier imprints a form of poetry onto the pieces which flow with impossible images, dancing to the rhythm of the juxtaposition and producing strongly aesthetic and sensual compositions.

Rauzier aims to embody the wholeness and the nothingness of the universe in each one of his works, generating an illusory reality which hypnotises the viewer. Through his production of fantasy architectures, the artist questions the future of our cultural legacy, the position of the individual in the urban space and the impact of this on the world and on the preservation of history. Rauzier feels “astonished by the works of human beings, whether past or present, by what we inherit. Painting, music, architecture, and above all, books. I believe that libraries are very important as they hold a concentration of an immense amount of knowledge […] In a single library, you can access the work of thousands of men… What a long history humanity has!”

Longue Histoire, which is also the title of one of the artist’s works, paints a perplexing portrait of what it means to be human, defining its essence as an insatiable impulse for knowledge and creation, leaving eternal traces in history. Rauzier’s treatment of the subject is through a vision which is at once familiar and alienating, inspiring the viewer to contemplate the idea captured in each work.

Referred to as a “magician of reality” by curator and art critic Damien Sausset, Rauzier has also been included in Regis Contentin’s list of “digital Baroque” artists. As a master of digital technology, the artist has won wide recognition and has exhibited in countless institutions such as the Annenberg Foundation (Los Angeles), the Palais des Beaux-Arts (Lille), MMOMA (Moscow), Le Botanique (Brussels), the News Museum (Washington DC) and the Diocesan Museum (Barcelona), to name but a few. His works also form part of various private collections such as those of Louis Vuitton, Bernard Magrez and Versailles, etc.
