This prestigious annual exhibition will show over 200 portraits by over 100 artists and celebrates the diversity of this fascinating genre. It also shows the popularity of commissioning painted portraits by institutions and individuals.

Our top artists have painted several national figures. The Society’s President, Alastair Adams, portrays the former Prime Minister, Tony Blair. Keith Breeden depicts the senior Liberal Democrat politician Sir Menzies Campbell and Michael Noakes the famous athlete Sir Roger Bannister, June Mendoza the noted conductor Stephen Barlow and Saied Dai the polymath Sir Jonathan Miller. Jeff Stultiens is showing a portrait of the colourful race horse trainer Sir Mark Prescott.

Works selected from submission include: Lord Kinnock, the former Labour Leader, painted by Edward Sutcliffe, Lord King, the former Governor of the Bank of England, painted by Diana Blakeney, the well known actress Tamsin Greig by Matthew Garrard and the distinguished barrister Baroness Kennedy of the Shaws is depicted by Sue Spall.

Antony Williams is exhibiting two studies Antonia Looking up and Emma Leaning on her Hand. Melissa Scott-Miller is showing a portrait of her daughter. Sue Ryder’s group portrait The Edwards Family is also on show as is Daphne Todd’s portrait of Dr. Stephen Spurr, Headmaster of Westminster School.

Prizes awarded by the Society are the Ondaatje Prize for Portraiture, the Prince of Wales Award for Portrait Drawing, the Changing Faces Prize and the de Laszlo Foundation Prize. The winner of the sixth Bulldog Bursary, awarded by the Society and sponsored by the Bulldog Trust, will be announced shortly after the exhibition.

Since 1891 The Society has been devoted exclusively to the art and development of portrait painting. The selection of work on display, both from its members and the open section, make it the perfect destination for those wishing to commission a portrait. Portraiture is a fascinating barometer of current trends and holds a mirror up to nature in reflecting life in contemporary Britain.
