This display of rarely seen images from the Museum of Liverpool's collections shows snapshots of Liverpool children's experiences of growing up over time.

Whilst many images depict friendships, family, and fun – things we often associate with childhood – others show the different realities of children's lives, such as working to support their families, war-time evacuation and ill health.

When do you think was the best time to grow up? What was your favourite childhood experience?

Below is a selection of the highlight images from the display. See all 25 photographs on display in 'Growing up in the city' in Education Area 1 on the ground floor of the Museum of Liverpool.

You can also find out about diverse Liverpool childhoods, today and in the past, in the 'Growing Up and Growing' Older display in The People’s Republic gallery.
