The 13th international Vilnius Book Fair will take place in Vilnius, Lithuania, on February 23rd through February 26th, 2012; the event will be held together with the Baltic Book Fair. The latter started in 1995 and takes place annually in one of the capital cities of the three Baltic countries. In 1999 the Baltic Book Far was held for the first time in Vilnius; the great success and the big influx of visitors introduced the beginning of the annual international Vilnius Book Fair.

Vilnius Book Fair focuses mainly on the readers, as it promotes reading, it introduces the novelties of Lithuanian publishing market, and it brings readers and writers together. The most unique feature of the Vilnius Book Fair is the wealth of cultural events, as this attracts thousands of book lovers from Lithuania and adjacent countries. The cultural program has over 300 different events and every year it highlights one solid topic.

The international Vilnius Book Fair is a unique event that was born at the Vilnius Book Fair in 2003, and every year is held exclusively in Vilnius. Visitors of the fair are encouraged to take part in the creative workshops, readings, meetings with the creators of Lithuanian children’s literature, book illustrators from Lithuania and foreign countries. The objective of it is to show the development of the book from the ancient times to today, to teach paper production, book binding modes, and illustration techniques. By doing so, the very young readers learn how to love and respect books.

There is also the Vilnius Book Fair Discussion Club; this adds a more intellectual content to the Fair. Events held in the Book Fair Discussion Club are not related to any specific publishing house or new publication. Instead, the topic of discussion is usually associated with the main topic of the year. The eminent Lithuanian and foreign representatives of culture, art, and science, take part in the club’s discussions as well.
