David B. Smith Gallery is delighted to announce an exhibition of new works by new media artist Michael Theodore. Titled organism/mechanism, this exhibition includes a large scale sitespecific work, called endo/exo, ten works on paper in the project room, five engraved scratchboards, and a series of three video works and printed stills on view in the loft gallery.

Endo/exo, a kinetic, sculptural lightwork, fills the main gallery with fields of color reminiscent of the lightwork pioneers, while reintroducing the presence of the sculptural object. Theodore’s installation combines a structural exoskeleton with a network of roping yarn and programmed, rotating rods, which move with the viewer and add an immersive sound element to the work.

The driving force behind Michael Theodore’s artistic practice is an exploration of perceptual sensations. This exhibition further investigates the “fertile interstitial boundary between order and disorder,” which was expressed in Theodore’s solo exhibition show, Field Theory at the University of Colorado, CU Art Museum in the summer of 2012.

Theodore’s current body of work goes into a deeper exploration of the relationship between controlled, perceptible patterns and beckoning chaos. With video works reimagining natural processes and systems, including the refraction index of glass, and lyrical works on paper modeled through a generative looping process, Theodore's practice represents the synthesis between digital art and more traditional materials and mark-making.

Please join us for a reception with Michael Theodore celebrating this exciting exhibition of incredible new works, to be held at the gallery on Saturday, May 11, from 7 - 9 pm. Please visit the exhibition page on our website for more information about organism/mechanism.

Michael Theodore's technology-informed work with sound and visual media has been presented over the last fifteen years to diverse audiences across the United States and internationally; including Trinidad and Tobago, Greece, Spain, Germany, Sweden, France, Australia, Japan, and China.
