For centuries artists have been painting drapery and fabric to express emotion, create drama and tension. Works of art by the old Masters such as Caravaggio, Mantegna, and El Greco used fabric to convey ideas and showcase painting skills. In 2011 for the first time in Irene Delka McCray’s illustrious career, her paintings were without the figure. For the “Cloth” exhibit she has once again created breathtaking paintings without the figure. McCray, one of the region’s most esteemed figure painters, throws large pieces of silky cloth as high as she can while watching it unpredictabley make momentary graceful forms. Although these new paintings are without the figure, one sees the immediacy of movement and forms within these paintings such as “Into”. This series continues to be the artist’s inner exploration and meant as scenes from the psychic self. Irene Delka McCray teaches at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. Dianne Vanderlip curator emeritus Denver Art Museum, described Irene Delka McCray as "the best figure painter in the region". McCray is in the permanent collection of The Denver Art Museum.

Virginia Maitland has been paintings for over 40 years. The irresistible impact of brilliant color as seen thru the veils of color field paintings by Virginia Maitland are delicate, ethereal and visceral. She attended the distinguished Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where she studied painting in the academic tradition. Maitland’s paintings are the perfect balance between freedom and structure.

“Cloth” was inspired by and in celebration of the Denver Art Museum’s “Spun” exhibit.
