The artists chosen to be in this exhibition are at least 70 years young and have been making their mark in Miami before Art Basel, Art Fair Week, Art Miami, or the graffiti walls arrived. Their personal visions must be considered if we are to have a full understanding of the history of art in Miami in this century as well as for future centuries. In the course of organizing this exhibition, the most difficult decision was which artists to invite (how does one select within the select?). In the end, however, beyond the age of the artist, the only criteria used were the aesthetic qualities of each work.

Artists do not retire. Their creative juices do not stop flowing at the arbitrary retirement age of 65. The artists in 20 Shades of Grey are fervent and tenacious about their work. These artists have gained the freedom to choose and pursue individual pathways in the landscape of life.

This exhibition does not pretend to be a comprehensive survey of those contemporary artists 70 years young or older. The sheer number of artists in such a comprehensive survey would be beyond our physical capabilities. This exhibition does illustrate the rewards of discipline, hard work, perseverance, and a lifetime of dedication. Each artist’s unending and unresolved struggle with their life’s work is, in itself, its own reward. Each of the artists is creating a legacy to be reckoned with by the art historians.

We hope that younger artists and other viewers who have the opportunity to see the exhibition will take heart in the fact that a lifetime of work goes neither unnoticed nor unappreciated. This exhibition honors those who have dedicated their lives to their art and have achieved the position of Florida National Treasures.
