In Words Fade Away Bekris Gallery brings together works by artists who incorporate script into their practice. Whether painted on the canvas, incised into a base or collaged over an image, script becomes a integral part of each creation. On occasion the script is recognizable as is the case with the shreds of newsprint and posters which Bruce Clarke incorporates into his paintings. On occasion the script cannot be deciphered because it is asemic script, calligraphed letters of the artist’s invention. Abdoulaye Ndoye’s impeccably handwritten letters in a script all his own force an appreciation of the graphic qualities of letters. Between these two extremes, Words Fade Away offers canvases by Soly Cisse whose childhood fascination with the numbers and letters on radiological plates surfaces as an almost mystical element in many of his canvases and Wosene Worke Kosrof—the first Ethiopian born artist to use Amharic script as a primary element in his paintings—who plays with letters while allowing them to play with his viewers.

Bekris Gallery's mission is to expand the audience for African contemporary art. To that end the Gallery presents work by emerging, mid-career and internationally acclaimed African artists, both those living in Africa and those who are a part of the vast African diaspora. The mediums we present include paintings, sculpture, works on paper and photography. The Gallery's rigorous exhibition program presents eight shows per year including individual, two artist and group exhibitions.

Proceeds from each Bekris Gallery exhibition are contributed to an organization which serves the goals of food security and human development in one of the many countries called home by artists whose work Bekris Gallery presents.
