Chandler Fine Art is pleased to present a show of paintings and collages by Brooklyn-based artist Josette Urso.

The collage works are an investigation into the complex nature of existence and the tension that exists between chaos and order. Through the use of abstract symbols in combination with representational imagery the viewer can search for clues into the intricate systems that govern reality. We can see cycles and processes which are simultaneously microcosmic and macrocosmic, logical and cryptic, and explicit and vague. Her work explores the tangled thread connecting man with nature.

In her paintings, she manages a balancing act between urban and natural subjects. The approach involves "moment-to-moment" extrapolation that is governed by intuitive leaps of scale, color and wayward geometry. "A wry, opulent cartography of their own making." is how Roberta Smith described them in a recent review in the New York Times.

There is a cross-pollination occurring between these two distinct bodies of work. Seeing them side by side allows us a close-up view of the process.

Ms Urso has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Her work is part of several public collections including the Tampa Museum of Art, Tampa FL and the Federal Reserve Bank, New York, NY. She has received many grants, awards and residencies including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant.

She lives with her husband in Brooklyn, New York.
