Paul Mahder Gallery is pleased to present, “Redemption: Waiting in the Silence”, paintings and drawings by Patrick Graham, Ireland’s most influential contemporary artist. A reception will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2013 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. This exhibit will be on display through July 7, 2013. Paul Mahder Gallery is located in Presidio Heights at 3378 Sacramento Street at Walnut.

Recognized by his nation as a “living national treasure” through his election to the Aosdana Society, Graham’s profound impact as an artist has been credited by art historians with changing the face of Irish painting, from academic and English-centric, to an expansive, neo-expressionism that plumbs the depths of personal consciousness and the memories, songs and poetry, of his childhood in the Irish countryside.

In his paintings and drawings, Patrick Graham creates meditations in the form of landscapes and iconic imagery that touches upon questions pertaining to reality, the meaning of life, and the search for faith in a world of diminishing absolutes.

“In this world of silence, no truth exists, there is the abandonment of power that truth manifestly becomes in that other world of dogma, ideology and aesthetic certainty. The silence becomes the painting, the painting comes from silence. It is the moment when painting is no longer an act of doing or making but of receiving. This is no ego shape here, no facilitative reply to aesthetic notions, whether historical or contemporary, there is only that desperate faith of the abandoned and… there is the discovery and rediscovery of ‘Art’, which is exhilarating.” - Patrick Graham

Graham often speaks about the power that emerges from this silent waiting as being redemptive in his life.

Graham’s work has been the subject of notable museum and gallery exhibitions all over the world, including the National Gallery of Ireland, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Grey Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, The Berkeley Art Museum, Trinity College, The Hokkaido Museum, Japan, the University of Michigan, Northeastern University, The Hugh Lane Gallery, City College of Pasadena, California, and others.
