“My recent figures are often put together in hills and valleys- a name I give to a style of modeling apparent in the Donatello bronze David. It makes for a painterly effect. It is created in a tactile way, moving, not off the edge, on the line, but in and out, using pressure; working inside the form.

The light which appears in the bottom of the valley of the volumes making the surface illusionist, almost watery, dissolves some of the solid tactile substance and replaces it with space through the play of light in patterns through the solids. This point of methodology takes up much of the effort in the evolution of the final image. It also is a preparation, through the emphasis on light for the clay to pass successfully into bronze. I look through the clay to envision it in bronze.

These are provisional people, each one trying to arrest the process as I have described it at a moment which will help the next figure better engage the problems I have tried to outline. Perhaps these figures are to be judged not through an understanding of values outlined by the concept of sculpture as defined in Modernity but whether or not one has a feeling of affection for these figures as people who have survived with some measure of internal identity.” - Bruce Gagnier, 2013
