Erarta Galleries is pleased to present the exhibition Hushed Forests: A Meditation on Nature featuring the paintings of Andrey Mamaev. Mamaev’s paintings are wondrous works of detailed landscapes coupled with a romantic understanding of light and a dedication to the natural world.

Andrey Mamaev’s paintings fluidly carry light through each composition, allowing for the viewer’s eyes to wander through each piece and trail the bark, branches, and blades of grass of each landscape. His works are almost meditative in their sense of tranquility and physical location. Each stroke retains a painterly graceful movement that has a distinct function in the composition.

Images of grasses and bark are built up through layers of language-like symbols in browns, lavenders, blues, and ochers. Though academic in style, Mamaev’s works are like a twist on photographic realism through landscape. Up close, his painterly brushstrokes are languid while simultaneously purposefully conveying light and colors through each piece. Far away, these paintings catch the eye like photographic portraits of forests and small cabins enveloped in snow.

Andrey Mamaev was born on February 26th, 1965 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia. He graduated from the Leningrad Art School where he had his first show in 1986. Mamaev then studied at the Sukhumi Art School in Georgia. His works are held in many private collections across the world.
