SpazioA is pleased to announce, Saturday February 1, 2014, 6 pm, Frammenti an exhibition by the German artist Irma Blank at the gallery project space, with works from the project Horizont.

Irma Blank uses writing as a tool of intuitive, pre-logical knowledge, reducing the linguistic signs to primitive, primordial signs captured in a pre-semantic and pre-linguistic stage equivalent to a return of the artist to her origins. Blank’s writing is generally made up of signs that refer to nothing other than themselves, like the signs of any other abstract graphic composition. ln contrast to this sort of script, the Pre-Text celebrates a primal or primordial form of writing. Through a rotating movement of both hands, the body enters into the text and endows the writing with a sense of rhythm and vibration transforming it into a closely-meshed pattern of illegible signs.

“The spatial project of Horizont is based on the extreme tension of the luminous band as a revelation of an interior path, concentrated not only on the sequence of the different lengths of the diptychs but above all on the imaginative opportunities that go beyond the ascertain-able trajectory. In the calibrated construction of Horizont various factors come into play: the dimension of each diptych in relation to the whole; the above and the below as a genesis of the horizon itself; the regular distance between the perimeters of each single surface; the quantity of voids compared to the quality of the signs.

Each diptych is inseparable from the linguistic-structural continuity of the whole composition. From the beginning, the routes of the sign establish the luminous weight of the colour in its arrangement towards the infinite, suspended and propelled by gradations within the pre-established sequence. As always in Irma Blanks art, the progressive insinuation of the script texture in the void derives from the rhythm of the gesture that invades the surface encouraging the unlimited extension of the zone of light. This dynamics also functions within each single diptych; it is a circumscribed part that counts for all, without hierarchies, since in the short segment of horizon there is already the essential tension of the space that goes beyond its own grid of writing.” (Claudio Cerritelli, 2009)

Irma Blank, German by birth (Celle, 1934), Blank moved to Italy, where she still resides, at a very young age. Her work developed in the atmosphere of linguistic experimentation typical of the second half of the 1960s, in which the exponents of the minimal-conceptual avant-gardes recorded the time of their existence, of being in the here and now.

She exhibited at GAM di Bologna (1977), Documenta 6, Kassel (1977), Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster (1979), Fondation Nationale des Arts Graphiques et Plastiques, Parigi (1980), Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Parigi (1981, 1996), Bonner Kunstverein e Stadtische Galerie Regensburg (1981), Musée des Beaux Arts Rouen (1982), Centre Pompidou Parigi (1985, 2009, 2010 e 2013), Quadriennale Roma (1986, 2005), Heidelberger Kunstverein (1990), PAC di Milano (1992), Folkwangmuseum Essen (1992), MOMA New York (1992), Museo della Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venezia (1996), Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf (1997), Museion Bolzano (2002, 2009), Museo della Permanente, Milano (2002), Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea Roma (2007), MART Rovereto (2007), Palazzo Reale Milano (2010).
