Twenty First Gallery is pleased to present Inscape, a group exhibition in celebration of creative instinct, the poetic reflex in a person that defines their instinctual aesthetic choices.

Featuring 35 works from over a dozen designers, this selection of pieces speaks to the distinctive nature of things and people through the forms and gestures that provoke them. From striking pattern and organic happenstance to vivid color that ebbs and flows, Inscape serves as an internal landscape for future feelings evoked.

The show’s title, Inscape, is a direct nod to the term itself, originally coined by poet Gerard Manley Hopkins (from the ideas of philosopher Duns Scotus) who believed that everything – every object, place, and person – was idiosyncratic because of its singular, intrinsic beauty. It’s with this concept that ‘Inscape’ has been assembled – curating an amalgamation of works that are emboldened by their sincere uniqueness.

On view are six works of art by French artist François Corbeau that play upon light as an active component in the space. Made of mirror polished silver, the gleaming finish of his pieces evoke a brilliant luminosity that act as a mirror of the surrounding space. The reflection of the gallery is cast upon their surfaces, along with the beings that share space with them, giving these furnishings the power of “instant energy exchange,” as the artist describes it.

Gold and Platinum Mirror I crafted by the leading Italian ceramicist of his generation, Giuseppe Ducrot, is also on view. Lush with embellishment and boasting gravity-defying asymmetrical curves that capture every glimpse of light, the mirror draws inspiration from the classical sculptures of Rome and Greece as well as Baroque art. Ducrot reinterprets iconic Italian sculptural techniques and masterfully blends them with contemporary experimental gestures that coexist to create one of a kind pieces. Notably, Ducrot was recently commissioned to design the facades of Christian Loubotin’s new hotel opening in April of this year.

Designers on view include: Nicolas Aubagnac, Emmanuel Babled, François Corbeau, Anne and Vincent Corbière, Giuseppe Ducrot, Jean-Marie Fiori, Victor Fotso Nyie, Alice Gavalet, Pierre Gonalons, Jean Grisoni, Hubert Le Gall, Valentin Loellmann, Alexandra Mocanu, Jean de Piépape, RoWin’Atelier, Marcin Rusak, Béatrice Serre, Saccomano-Dayot and Nathalie Ziegler-Pasqua.
