A new exhibition at The Lowry takes dance off the stage and celebrates work created specifically for the camera.

In the Frame: Dance on Film explores the presentation of dance via a selection of films by visual artists, choreographers and dance companies, redefining the idea of the moving image and constructing a new stage for dance.

Featuring selection of films from New York City Ballet’s New Beginnings, a moving film for two dancers shot at dawn at World Trade Centre 4 in New York in 2013, to Happy to be So, a documentary that charts the lives of two principal ballet dancers who have been partners in life and dance for over 50 years.

Dance sensation BalletBoyz have contributed four films featuring choreography for the camera and film-maker Rashad Newsome presents a study of the dance phenomenon of Voguing. Human movement and computer coding intersect in Universal Everything’s Presence and The Lowry’s own Youth Dance Ambassadors present a series of photographs from their Dance Anywhere project, in which they’ve invited the public to send in photographs of dance in unusual/public spaces.

The Lowry is also very proud to present the critically acclaimed All This Can Happen by choreographer Siobhan Davies and filmmaker David Hinton. Made entirely from early archive photographs and footage from the earliest days of cinema the film follows the footsteps of the protagonist from the short story ‘The Walk’ by writer Robert Walser.

Kate Farrell, special exhibitions manager at The Lowry said “In the Frame: Dance on Film is an exciting opportunity to explore work created exclusively for the camera, presenting an exhibition dedicated to film; a significant new venture for our gallery programme. With our strong dance audience, and the Centre for Advanced Training on site, The Lowry Galleries offer the perfect opportunity to display critically acclaimed work by a number of international companies, constructing a new stage for dance within a visual arts context.”
